It’s no
secret that I love to bake. I always have. I have a notable sweet tooth and I honestly just think it’s fun to make something so delicious from scratch. Sometimes I think it has something to do with my grandmother. I definitely have baking in my genes. Even though the kind of food we eat has changed so much over the years, the urge to create and consumer has never wavered. I feel more connected to my Italian heritage than my Irish side even though I never really knew a lot of my Italian family, might it have something to do with the recipe heirlooms? My Italian grandmother, on my mother’s side (now referred to as Grandma x’s and o’s), unfortunately passed away when I was a baby, so I have no memory of her. But I do have her recipes. I haven’t even ventured to make that many of them, but they’ll be there when I’m ready to take the plunge. I’ve stuck to the classic sugar cookies, anisette, and zaipola because I don’t like to mess with the classics, but even moreso, I think it fills some tradition void, even if I’m baking solo. It makes me feel connected to Grandma x’s and o’s and to the part of her that is in me when I read her handwriting on the old recipe cards and make the treats that she made a million times for her family, the exact same way.
Maybe I really do just have a super human sweet tooth and I’m reading way too far into it, but the point is I love to bake. I love the decadence of desserts. So in honor of the Puppy Bowl today, surely the most important event of the day, I made Grandma x’s and o’s famous sugar cookies, with a twist. I was fortunate enough to find a daschund cookie cutter, and it really put the perfect spin on the old classic. I love love LOVE how they came out!
